Charles - Juggling Underwater

This collage holds a special place for me as it’s my first EP cover collage. Since it would represent the entire album, I wanted to create a piece that encompassed the whole album rather than focusing on a single song. These emotionally rich and deeply melancholic alternative pop songs gave me the feeling of being underwater. Yet, at times, they carried a warmth that brought me closer to the surface, offering a moment to breathe.

That’s why, although the viewer may not consciously notice it, I intentionally used shades of blue that evoke the question, “Is this the blue of the sky, or the blue of the water?” Sometimes relationships feel this way too—we find ourselves wondering, “Am I in or out? Can I breathe, or can’t I?”

The pelican and the woman are the two main characters in this collage, and they look in different directions. Yet, they remain connected, as we understand from the fish they share. However, there’s a deep sorrow in the fact that the fish they share is torn apart. While the two characters appear to exist in the same habitat or the same lake, the collage visually and metaphorically separates them. The pelican is on the rocky terrain, while the woman is surrounded by coral.

With this collage, I aimed to create an atmosphere that feels both unsettling and peaceful at the same time. The imperfect cuts and edges are intentional, serving as a reminder of the imperfections and humanity in our relationships.
